The Red Shift

Have several old prints or slides that seem to be turning red? Many consumer photo shops in the late ’60s through the late ’60s used vegetable-based dyes during the printing process. Over time, these dyes can degrade and cause images to develop an overall red color cast. To make things worse, the type of paper used during that same time period caused the cyan dyes in the image to almost entirely disintegrate, only adding to the red color shift.

Many bulk-processed photo prints from the 1970s will only retain their original color for around ten years and can start to fade or shift colors. Cheap bulk-produced slides were popular during that time, and after a decade or so, the transparency begins to fade, colors begin to shift or the glue on the frames may start to separate. Blurry Photos
